-Why the ban on social media + certain websites like BBC and even Yahoo… ”the government’s effort to neutralize critical online opinion comes after a series of large anti-Japanese, anti-pollution, anti-corruption protests, and ethnic riots, many of which were organized or publicized using instant messaging services, chat rooms, and text messages.”
(they basically do not want people to protest again like 1989 Tiananmen Square where over 100,000 students + intellectuals protested and the People’s Liberation Army used live fire to disperse crowds killing several hundred people.)
- at least 18,000 websites are blocked from within mainland China.
- violaters can face up to $1800 (15,000Yuan) or imprisonment for crimes
-Government authorities not only block website content but also monitor the Internet access of individuals. Even trigger words typed OR SPOKEN over phone like “protest” will purposely be interrupted or dropped.
- China “has the largest recorded number of imprisoned journalists and cyber-dissidents in the world.” The offences of which they are accused include communicating with groups abroad, opposing the persecution of people, signing online petitions, and calling for reform and an end to corruption.
While in Korea I found it really interesting to learn just HOW popular plastic surgery is among teens and young adults. The desired result being a more “Western” look with wider eyes (a procedure called double eyelid surgery) whiter skin and higher nose bridges.
Plastic surgery is SO common among teens that it is very commonly used as an incentive from parents to guarantee good grades in school with surgery being paid for and done over summer or winter break. There is a presumption that a certain look will allow an advantage in job hunting, college admissions and even finding a better husband.
Both male & females partake in these surgeries that can be as quick as a 3 hr visit or up to 3 months as in jaw/cheekbone reconstruction upon where the patient has their jaw wired shut. OUCH!
Plastic surgery in Korea has become very popular with Japanese, Chinese and Korean Americans flying in to have these procedures done!
Many of the Korean pop stars and celebrities have done multiple surgeries to get what I like to call the desired ‘wide-eyed CUTE’ look!
I came to realize that it is not just America that has an obsession with image and what society feeds us as ‘desirable’ or like-able.
It is truly worldwide!

Every morning I write in my journal and it has become a practice I have made a habit after learning about it from the amazing book The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron.
Regardless of if I feel like writing, have nothing to write about or feel my journal entry is bland, it does not matter, I do 3pages of my ‘morning pages' each day.
Since starting this journal (marked with a post here on my blog) back in December I have reintroduced myself to the “morning pages" because I slipped off for awhile and with this being the year of my wedding I really wanted to put down all my thoughts, feelings, joys and frustrations in planning this big day.
I’ve almost filled up this journal and will have to look for a new one soon but I feel very good about seeing all those pages filled with my words that express my ideas and feelings. This journal is something tangible and created by me and it puts into perspective the measurement of my life in time by way of each page AND of value by expressions with the words I choose!
The more I write with this new perspective the more I choose to fill each page with things I am grateful for, the beauty in the relationships and environment around me and the dreams I have for myself. In seeing that a piece of my life can be preserved in ONE journal in roughly 12 weeks I want to make sure that each installment really captures where my heart is at that time and ultimately how I have grown + evolved.
I choose my words just as I must always remember that I choose what I expereince in this life. How I react is a choice therefore how I write about it is a choice.
